You’re a month into Distance learning and – it’s a struggle. “What to do when you don’t know what to do!”
Many parents thought we’d be back to in-person classrooms in the fall. That’s certainly not the case everywhere, and in California, where BrainLeap is located, we are 100% remote. Therefore, we think it’s time to share some strategies to make your distance learning experience a great one.
Giving children a daily schedule and routine is very important during this time. Your child is used to their routines at school. To help keep them on task, set an at-home routine that includes lunchtime, playtime, and reading hour.
Have a designated time and location within your home for your children to associate with “school time”. This type of space that your children use for school time (and homework time) can help them focus.
One benefit of the current state of the world is that online resources have exploded. Many websites and online platforms provide an abundance of distance learning resources. Carve out time to research what others have to share rather than reinventing the wheel. Try https://www.khanacademy.org/ as a place to start for math.
New activities add some variety to the day and help keep your child engaged and happy. Plan indoor and outdoor games and take a break to intentionally spend time with your child to connect. It doesn’t have to be all fun and game. These activities can include splitting up household chores or cooking dinner together.
This is the perfect opportunity to begin a new project or learn something new such as cooking, crafting, even an instrument. Once your child finds something they are passionate about learning, you no longer have to push them to practice.
Remember, your child is used to being in the classroom. So not being in the classroom may be a challenge and feel as if Summer vacation isn’t over. Be patient and supportive.
Regardless of the pandemic, your child’s education is very important to their overall development, but it can be tough for parents. When you feel frustrated, take a break, take a deep breath, and regroup later. Stick to the routine and your child will adjust to this new way of learning.
BrainLeap’s Attention Arcade attention training games can provide a great post-zoom activity that your child finds fun. This is a great way to give your child a 30-minute afternoon activity that builds his or her attention skills (and gives you a break).
